    Description
This is such a rare piece!
Made of a traditional kimono shibori fabric that is hand done tie dye. The design is made by tiny rubber bands or hand tied off string. The pattern is so well thought out. The symmetry of the design matches so nicely with the cut of the coat. What makes this piece so unusual is the "Western" design of the coat.  Did someone bring the fabric from Japan, or someone in Japan make a more Western coat? Not sure, but, the combination is stunning!
I believe this piece is vintage, because of the way it's constructed. Lots of hand finishing, with delicate sewn stitches. I generally only see this type of quality craftsmanship on vintage pieces. There is machine work as well. Another indicator is the sheer fine cotton lining. It's completely hand sewn and finished.
This could be worn as a light coat or even a dress. Worn casually or dressed up with pearls. What an exotic piece to wear to an art gallery opening or your favorite sushi restaurant. This is definitely a one of a kind creation. In all of my years of collecting vintage clothing and Japanese kimonos, I have never seen anything like it. I am not a shibori expert, but I do collect them. It's a painstakingly long process to create this type of art, and art it is.
I live on the Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawaii. We have a thriving Japanese community, that has been in residence for almost a century (probably longer). As a collector, I have the opportunity to see and purchase a lot of vintage Japanese items. This by far is the most stunning and unusual piece to date. If there was even a chance that I could fit into this, it would not be leaving my clutching grip. It's time to pass the torch.
At first glance this piece looks pristine. On close inspection I found:
Ever so slight interior collar discoloration. Not seen when worn and
1/8" fabric flaw, front left 4" in from left flap. This is hidden when button closed.
Three almost indiscernible 1/8" discoloraitons on rear right 3" right of center, 3 1/2" from hem. I spot tested them and they lifted quite easily. I think dry cleaning would remedy.
All above are mentioned for accuracy.
The lining has damage. This is caused by the delicate thin nature of the cotton.  Lining is frayed on underarms. The area closest to bottom hem has small holes where the fabric has pulled away from the stitch. Luckily none of this shows when worn.
It has been carefully stored in my climate controlled storage unit. It is clean and ready to wear upon arrival.
